Because the museum and art museum are integrated into one facility, you can learn a wide range of topics, from the very origins of Okinawa to its contemporary art scene.
The history of Okinawa is characterized by the prosperity of the Ryukyu Kingdom, a harmonious coexistence with the natural environment, and the formation of a unique culture. This facility presents the journey of Okinawa through multiple lenses, including archaeological materials, ethnographic perspectives, and fine arts. You can learn about the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the natural environment of Okinawa, and the evolution of artistic expression that continues to this day.
Inside the facility, permanent exhibitions for the museum and collection exhibitions for the art museum are held. In the museum section, you can encounter Okinawa's nature, history, and archaeological artifacts, while the art museum allows you to appreciate Okinawan-related crafts and contemporary art. While exhibition contents vary by season, the displays are essential for understanding the identity of Okinawa.
On weekdays, the facility is open until 18:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays, it stays open until 20:00, making evening sightseeing possible. By utilizing the late-night hours on Fridays and Saturdays, you can enjoy the exhibits at a relaxed pace after your daytime sightseeing. Regardless of the season, you can immerse yourself in Okinawan culture within a comfortable, indoor environment.
In the permanent museum exhibits, you can deepen your understanding through the use of audio guides (available in Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, and Spanish). Additionally, special exhibitions based on specific themes are frequently held, ensuring there is always something new to discover.
Located in the Omoromachi area, the heart of Naha City, the museum is surrounded by many shopping malls and restaurants, making it an easy stop during your sightseeing route. It is easily accessible via Monorail or local bus.
