Ojiya City Nishikigoi no Sato is a unique facility where you can observe the world-renowned 'Swimming Jewels'—the Nishikigoi (colored koi)—up close. Ojiya City in Niigata Prefecture is famous as a major production center for Nishikigoi. At this facility, you can observe the elegant movements and brilliant colors of these fish through both indoor tanks and outdoor garden ponds. It is a place where you can experience the beauty of Nishikigoi, nurtured by traditional Japanese techniques, with all your senses.
The history of Nishikigoi dates back to the early 19th century during the Edo period. It is said to have begun in the region encompassing present-day Ojiya and Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture, when naturally occurring color mutations appeared in fish originally raised for food. Since then, through the rigorous research and refinement by local people amidst the heavy snowfalls of Ojiya, the breed has evolved. Today, Ojiya is recognized globally as a prestigious brand for high-quality Nishikigoi.
Inside the facility, you can observe a wide variety of Nishikigoi. In the indoor tanks, you can see the intricate patterns and vivid colors of the fish in much closer detail as they swim gracefully through the water. Additionally, the outdoor garden features well-maintained ponds, allowing you to enjoy the sight of the koi in a natural setting. During seasonal exhibitions, high-quality Nishikigoi are gathered, offering a rare chance to witness the pinnacle of Japanese breeding technology.
While Nishikigoi are on display year-round, the experience changes with the seasons. Special exhibitions are held in spring and autumn. In spring, the 'Echigo Ojiya Tatekoi Oriori' features 'Tatekoi' (fish that have survived the harsh winter). In autumn, the 'Niigata Prefecture Nishikigoi Exhibition' brings together exceptional fish from across the prefecture. Visiting during these times allows you to see the absolute best of the breed.
You can enjoy the experience of feeding the Nishikigoi at the facility. Watching them gather at the water's surface is a mesmerizing sight. Please note that fish food is sold in limited quantities and is only available until stock runs out. Additionally, sales may be restricted depending on the season or the health management of the fish, so it is recommended to check in advance.
Ojiya City is home to various historical structures and natural spots. A common itinerary is to combine a visit to Nishikigoi no Sato with exploring the local townscapes and cultural heritage.
