Ohashiya Residence is a traditional machiya (townhouse) located in Achi, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. As a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan, this site is a vital piece of cultural heritage that preserves traditional Japanese architectural styles. The structure features distinctive regional designs, such as white walls and the iconic Kurashiki lattice. The complex consists of several buildings, including the main house, a longhouse gate, a rice storehouse, and an inner storehouse, creating a spatial experience that vividly illustrates the lifestyle of the past.
The Ohashiya family has a history of development through the cultivation of rice fields and salt pans. Most of the existing structures were constructed in the late 18th century (Kansei era). In 1978, the main house, front gate, rice storehouse, and inner storehouse were designated as National Important Cultural Properties. Furthermore, the entire premises received additional designation in 1982. This site stands as a representative example of Kurashiki's machiya architecture, evolving alongside the region's historical development.
The architecture showcases the elegance of traditional Japanese living through the use of white walls, tiled roofs, and unique Kurashiki lattices. The rice storehouse serves as an exhibition space, displaying various household tools and utensils used in daily life during the era. Additionally, the presence of the 'Nagayamon' (longhouse gate) reflects the social structure of the time, with the building layout facing the main street. Visitors are encouraged to observe the intricate details and the overall structural harmony of the estate.
During daylight hours, the sunlight beautifully highlights the textures of the white walls and the intricate patterns of the lattices. While the atmosphere changes with the seasons, visiting during standard opening hours is recommended for the best experience. From April to September, the site remains open until 18:00 on Saturdays, allowing for a more relaxed evening visit. Please note that from December to February, the site is closed on Fridays, so it is important to check the schedule in advance.
Visitors can explore the interior of a historical Japanese home. Through the displayed household items, you can learn about the daily routines and culture of the past. A unique feature of this visit is the ability to step up onto the 'zashiki' (traditional tatami rooms), providing a firsthand understanding of Japanese spatial composition. After visiting the residence, we recommend strolling through the nearby historic streets to fully immerse yourself in the cultural atmosphere of Kurashiki.
As there are traditional tatami rooms, you will be required to remove your shoes. It is convenient to bring a small bag for your shoes and wear socks to keep your feet protected. Since this is a highly significant cultural property, please move carefully and follow all posted rules. Payment is primarily in cash. For English-language guidance, we recommend checking official resources prior to your visit. Please be mindful not to touch the historical structures or exhibits.
