Cape Nosappu is a beautiful headland located in Nosappu, Wakkanai City, Hokkaido, overlooking Soya Bay. The name is said to derive from the Ainu word "not-sam," meaning "near the jaw." Due to its geographical position near the northern tip of Hokkaido, the area offers a unique atmosphere. On days when the sea fog clears, visitors can witness the majestic silhouettes of remote islands such as Rishiri Island and Rebun Island. The Wakkanai Lighthouse serves as a symbolic landmark, and the surrounding area is dotted with facilities where you can learn about marine life and the local natural environment.

For instance, the Esanpoku Fishing Port Park features a "Dolphin Monument," based on local legends of dolphins passing through the Soya Strait. It is an area where history and nature have coexisted for generations.
The greatest attraction of Cape Nosappu is the view of the Wakkanai Lighthouse standing against the backdrop of Soya Bay. There is also a monument dedicated to the cape that allows visitors to feel the local history. The surrounding waters are a rich ecosystem where marine mammals such as whales, dolphins, killer whales, and seals can occasionally be spotted. Additionally, the nearby Nosappu Peak reaches an elevation of 210.3m, with a road leading to the summit, providing a spectacular high-altitude viewpoint.
You can enjoy the natural scenery of Cape Nosappu throughout the year. It is especially recommended to visit during times when the air is clear and sea fog is minimal to see the silhouette of "Rishiri Fuji" (Mount Rishiri) clearly. The summer months (June to August) are ideal for strolling while feeling the refreshing breeze of Hokkaido. In the evening, the contrast between the setting sun and the lighthouse creates a truly beautiful and tranquil landscape.
The area is perfect for nature observation and light walking. Adjacent to the cape are facilities like the Wakkanai City Nosappu Cold Water Aquarium and the Wakkanai City Youth Science Museum, where you can gain scientific knowledge about marine life. You can also enjoy walking along the Nosappu Course (Wakkanai Footpath). It is a wonderful place to spend quiet time observing birds and marine life while admiring the coastline.
Convenient facilities are located near the cape, including the Wakkanai City Nosappu Cold Water Aquarium, the Youth Science Museum, and various souvenir shops. The Esanpoku Fishing Port Park is also nearby, where you can encounter local stories through the dolphin monument. A common travel route involves taking a bus from Wakkanai Station to explore these nearby attractions.
Because the area is prone to strong sea breezes, we highly recommend wearing windproof and warm clothing. Even in summer, a light jacket may be necessary if the wind picks up. Please wear comfortable walking shoes as there may be uneven paths or steps.
