Nigaho Kogen is a scenic plateau located in Kaho City, Akita Prefecture, situated at an altitude of approximately 500 meters. This area, spreading at the northern foot of Mt. Chokai, is characterized by vast pastures, various lakes, wetlands, and seasonal wildflowers. The landscape is incredibly pastoral, with Jersey cows grazing freely across the hills. A unique feature of this area is the sight of more than 15 wind turbines standing tall against the horizon, creating a harmonious blend of modern renewable energy and natural beauty. The greatest charm of the plateau is its 360-degree panoramic view, where you can simultaneously witness the Sea of Japan, the Oga Peninsula, the Ou mountain range, and the magnificent Mt. Chokai rising directly before you.
The region has long been blessed by the rich natural environment provided by Mt. Chokai. The altitude of 500m makes the land highly suitable for agriculture and livestock-raising. Today, facilities like Tsuchida Farm continue this tradition by producing high-quality dairy and meat products. While maintaining its traditional landscape, the area has evolved into a modern scenic spot through the introduction of wind power generation. Furthermore, the geological history of the area is fascinating; the landscape bears the marks of a massive mountain collapse that is said to have occurred approximately 2,500 years ago, adding a sense of natural dynamism to the region's history.
There are many diverse attractions within the plateau. First, from the South Observatory, you can observe the Sea of Japan and Mt. Chokai from a height of 500m, as well as the remnants of ancient mountain collapses. The road lined with over 15 wind turbines is also a very popular driving route. Seeing the Jersey cows wandering through the greenery is a quintessential experience of this location. Additionally, visiting the 'Hibari-so' observation facility and purchasing fresh dairy and meat products directly from the local farms are highly recommended activities. As this is a high-altitude plateau, please be aware of temperature changes. Even in summer, it can feel cool when the wind blows, so it is wise to bring a light jacket. For walking, cycling, or camping, comfortable shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing are essential. Regarding payment, it is highly recommended to carry cash for purchases at Tsuchia Farm and other local facilities. To protect the environment, please follow local etiquette: take your trash home with you and do not touch or disturb the local plants and animals.
