Negoji Temple (Negoji-ji) is the 82nd temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, located in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is a Tendai sect temple situated on the slopes of Mt. Aomine, the main peak of the Shikodai mountain range. This site is a highly prestigious sacred ground, said to have been identified by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) as an ideal location for esoteric Buddhist training. The name of the temple originates from the fragrant sacred wood that once grew here, and visitors can still feel the refreshing air and the weight of history. It is a place where spiritual peace is found through the fusion of natural scenery and deep history.
The history of the temple dates back to the era of Kobo Daishi. It is said that during the Koin era (810–824), Kukai visited this land and perceived the Five Wisdom Tathagatas of the Diamond Realm across the five peaks of Shikodai. Kukai established the 'Kazo-in' on Mt. Aomine, designating this as a place for esoteric practice. Later, in 832, Chisho Daishi (Enchin) visited the site and, following instructions from the guardian deity of the mountain, established the 'Senju-in' using fragrant wood to carve a statue of Kannon. The scent from this wood is said to be the origin of the name 'Negoji.' Although the temple suffered from wars throughout history, it was restored by Matsudaira Yorishige, the first lord of the Takamatsu Domain. Today, it is carefully preserved as a significant temple of the Tendai sect.
The temple grounds are dotted with various historical buildings and stone statues. The main deity is the Thousand-Armed Kannon, and the main hall houses a secret Buddha statue that is only revealed once every 33 years. Visitors can explore the Sanmon (Nio Gate), the stone steps leading to the main hall, the Daishi Hall housing the statue of Kobo Daishi, and the Godai-do Hall. You can also encounter local legends through stone statues and scrolls related to the 'Ushi-oni' (ox-demon) legend. Additionally, the site of the 'Hakko Keyaki' tree, which was once said to be 1,600 years old, stands as a testament to the long history of this land.
Negoji Temple reveals different faces depending on the season. It is particularly famous as an autumn foliage spot (late October to November), when vibrant colors decorate the temple grounds. Because of this, many visitors are expected during this period. The temple is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visiting in the early morning is highly recommended to experience the most serene atmosphere and the crisp, fresh air. Please note that parking areas can become crowded during the peak autumn season, so allow extra time for your visit.
Here, you can truly feel the culture of the Shikoku Henro (pilgrimage). As the 82nd station, you can experience the atmosphere of a place where pilgrims have walked for centuries. You can also encounter traditional Japanese folklore through the exhibits and statues related to the 'Ushi-oni' legend. The process of climbing the historical stone steps toward the main hall is a meditative experience in itself, allowing you to clear your mind and connect with your inner self in a quiet, natural environment.
The area around Shikodai, where Negoji is located, is rich in nature and serves as an excellent base for sightseeing. It is easily accessible from Takamatsu City. The surrounding area also features various facilities to enjoy Kagawa's famous 'Udon' noodles and various accommodation options, making it easy to incorporate the temple into a larger travel itinerary through the pilgrimage route.
