Nasu Onsen is a charming hot spring area located at the southern foot of Mount Nasu within Nikko National Park, primarily in Nasu Town, Nasu District, Tochigi Prefecture. The history of Nasu Onsen is incredibly ancient. According to legend, it began in 630 AD (the Asuka period) when Kanō Saburō Yukehiro discovered a deer healing its wounds in the hot spring. During the Edo period, the area was managed by the Kurobane Clan, and the famous poet Matsuo Bashō is recorded to have stayed here during his journey in 'Oku no Hosomichi.' In the Meiji era, it served as a prestigious hot spring destination for high-ranking figures like General Nogi Maresuke. Many inns still display photographs and medals from the pre-war era, allowing visitors to feel the cultural depth of Japan's modern history.
The Nasu Onsen area consists of several unique sub-districts. The most historic, "Nasu Yumoto Onsen," features the iconic Shika-no-yu, a public bath known for its unique hydrogen sulfide spring water. "Kita Onsen" is famous as a filming location for the movie 'Thermae Romae' and is characterized by its large outdoor bath called 'Oyogi-ba' and its nostalgic atmosphere. For those seeking different experiences, you can visit the high-altitude 'Daimaru Onsen' or seek out the secluded 'Sandogoya Onsen,' a hidden spring that can only be reached by hiking.
