Sung even (Kura no Machi) is a historic area located in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, that preserves a breathtaking traditional landscape. The area is characterized by many buildings from the Edo period to the modern era, particularly the traditional 'Kura' (storehouse) style architecture. Historically, this area developed as a hub for river transport using the Sung even river, and today, the beautifully maintained scenery of black-painted 'Mise-kura' (shop warehouses) and white-walled storehouses remains intact. Additionally, the river is home to many koi fish, creating a serene and picturesque atmosphere that blends traditional Japanese streetscapes with the gentle flow of the water.
This region flourished as a post town on the road to Nikko during the Edo period and as a prosperous merchant town driven by river transport to Edo. At one time, it was known as the commercial center of Northern Kanto. Many of the existing buildings date back to the late Edo to mid-Meiji periods. Because the area was spared from air raids during the war, many architectural styles from the Taisho and early Showa eras have been preserved. Since the late Showa era, significant efforts have been made to maintain the historical landscape and develop it as a valuable cultural tourism resource.
The banks of the Sung even river are lined with striking black-painted and white-walled storehouses, forming a unique and photogenic landscape. The presence of approximately 100,000 koi fish swimming in the river is a signature element of this scenic beauty. One of the most popular activities is taking a sightseeing boat cruise to experience the river from a different perspective. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy walking along the 'Kura no Machi Odori' (Main Street) or the 'Sung even Tsunate-michi' promenade, which are well-maintained paths designed for leisurely strolls through the historic district.
The area offers a beautiful historical landscape regardless of the season. The scenery of the river and the movement of the koi fish are particularly easy to observe during the bright daylight hours. For example, you can visit facilities that detail the history of timber transport businesses that existed since the Edo period, as well as local museums housed in Meiji or Taisho-era buildings.
