The Nakamura Keith Haring Museum is the only museum in the world that showcases the works of Keith Haring, a representative artist of American art in the 1980s. Located at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters in Kobuchizawa, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, the museum is surrounded by abundant nature. Centered around the collection gathered by the founder, Kazuo Nakamura, this is a place where you can truly experience the message of 'from darkness to hope' embedded in Haring's art.
The main building opened in 2007. The founder, Kazuo Nakamura, encountered Keith Haring's work in New York in 1987 and began his collection. The museum was designed by the renowned architect Atsushi Kitagawara, a leading figure in contemporary architecture. In 2015, the museum underwent a renewal, adding the 'Freedom Exhibition Room' and the 'Museum Theater' (courtyard), evolving into a space that conveys Haring's philosophy and life in even more diverse ways.
The core of the exhibition consists of works characterized by Keith Haring's powerful lines and vibrant colors. The energy emitted by these pieces resonates with the surrounding natural environment, creating a unique atmosphere. The architecture itself is also a major attraction. Designed by Atsushi Kitagawara, the structure is a fusion of nature, art, and modern sensibility. You can feel the message of the art not only in the exhibition rooms but also in the courtyard, rooftop, and the lawn garden outside the building.
The museum is open throughout the year, but the surrounding scenery changes with the seasons. In spring and summer, the harmony between the greenery and the architecture is particularly striking, offering a refreshing atmosphere. In winter, please be aware that there may be snow or icy road conditions in the area, so check the weather before visiting. We recommend viewing the exhibits during the daytime when natural light flows beautifully into the exhibition rooms. Since the last admission is at 16:30, please plan your schedule with plenty of time to spare.

The museum is located in the Kobuchizawa area at the southern foot of the Yatsugatake mountains. The surrounding area is rich in water and nature, perfect for hiking and nature walks. The nearby boardwalks and natural environments complement the museum experience. It is accessible via taxi (about 8 minutes from JR Kobuchizawa Station) or by car. You can plan a trip that combines nature and art by using local sightseeing maps.
When entering the exhibition rooms, large luggage, backpacks, food and drinks, cameras other than smartphones (DSLR, digital cameras, action cameras, etc.), umbrellas, pens other than pencils, and dangerous goods are prohibited. Free coin lockers (100-yen coin return type) are available. Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the building and around the museum premises. As there are stairs on the paths to the rooftop and courtyard, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes for your visit.
