Nabegataki Falls is a magnificent waterfall located in Oguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture. The landscape is deeply connected to the geological history of the Aso Caldera, formed by massive eruptions approximately 90,000 years ago. The most striking feature is its 'curtain-like' appearance, with water cascading down a wide area of about 20 meters and a drop of approximately 10 meters. It is highly renowned as a precious spot where visitors can actually stand behind the waterfall, offering a unique perspective where you can view the outside world through a shimmering veil of water.
The origin of this site is rooted in the epic natural history of the Aso Caldera. The terrain, shaped by volcanic activity nearly 90,000 years ago, has evolved over countless years to create the beautiful waterfall seen today. It stands as a precious natural resource and a masterpiece of natural architecture.
The absolute highlight is the view from behind the falls (Takisura). Standing with the wide curtain of water at your back and looking out through the translucent veil is an experience unlike any other waterfall. Additionally, feeling the proximity of the flowing water near the riverbank provides a refreshing sense of rejuvenation through negative ions.
While Nabegataki is accessible year-round, it displays different expressions depending on the season. During periods of high water volume or when the surrounding greenery is lush and vibrant, the 'water curtain' feels even more vivid and powerful. The operating hours are from 8:30 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:30). Visiting during bright daylight hours allows for the clearest view of the scenery from behind the falls. Please note that the site may close temporarily due to weather conditions such as heavy rain, typhoons, or earthquakes, so checking the status in advance is highly recommended.
Here, you can experience the raw energy of nature with your entire body. By stepping behind the waterfall, you can feel the sound and the fine mist of the water, creating a sense of being one with nature. However, please exercise extreme caution as the area behind the falls and near the river can be dangerous due to the risk of falling rocks or slipping.
The area around Nabegataki is home to famous hot spring destinations like Kurokawa Onsen and Tsutetsuchi Onsen. A popular travel route involves enjoying the natural beauty of Aso followed by a relaxing soak in the hot springs. The site is also conveniently located about a 10-minute drive from the 'Michi-no-Eki Oguni Yu Station,' making it a great base for local sightseeing.
Since the path to the area behind the falls can be wet and involves stairs, we strongly recommend wearing non-slip, comfortable walking shoes. The walk from the parking lot to the waterfall involves about 120 steps and some steep slopes, so please dress appropriately for light hiking. Payment at the entrance must be made in Japanese Yen (cash). To manage crowds, a reservation system may be in place during certain periods, so please ensure you have completed your online booking in advance.
