Myoryoji is a Nichiren sect temple located in Kaminose, Minami Alps City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Historically, this area held significant land and was revered as 'Ura-Minobu,' a prestigious counterpart to the famous Minobu-san Kuon-ji Temple. While a devastating fire in 1949 destroyed many structures, the temple's most remarkable treasure, the 'Rinzo' (a massive rotating bookshelf), survived the blaze and remains preserved today. The temple is also a sacred site for those praying for safe childbirth, child-rearing, and the longevity of descendants, thanks to the deep devotion to the Kannon deity.
The temple was founded by the parent and child duo, Myoryo Hibutsu-ni and Nichiryo. A major turning point in its history was the great fire of 1949, which caused much of the temple's architecture to be lost, yet the surviving structures serve as a testament to its enduring historical value. Legend also suggests a connection to the Tokugawa clan, with traditions of prayers for the birth of heirs. As a spiritual hub rooted in the local community, Myoryoji has served as a pillar of mental and spiritual support for many generations.
One of the most unique features of Myoryoji is the 'Rinzo' that escaped the fire. This giant, rotating bookshelf is an incredibly rare architectural structure that showcases the advanced craftsmanship and culture of its time. Visitors can also offer prayers to the Kannon deity, a protector for safe childbirth and child-rearing, within a serene and sacred atmosphere. The temple grounds also feature traditional gates and halls that allow you to experience the profound aesthetics of Japanese architecture up close.
Myoryoji offers a different charm in every season. The most spectacular time is spring (late March to April) when the cherry blossoms, said to have been transplanted from Minobu-san, reach full bloom. During this period, the temple grounds are bathed in vibrant colors, offering a peaceful moment amidst nature. In April, traditional ceremonies such as the 'Senbu-e' ritual may also be held, allowing visitors to experience the harmony of seasonal landscapes and ancient traditions.

When visiting the temple, please respect the quiet environment. As there are areas where you may need to remove your shoes, it is convenient to wear easy-to-remove footwear and bring clean socks. If you wish to purchase amulets (Omamori) or temple stamps (Goshuin), please prepare cash (Japanese Yen). Regarding photography, please follow local etiquette and respect the sacredness of the grounds. Please note that there are some steps and uneven surfaces, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
