Muramatsu Park is located in Atago, Gosen City, Niigata Prefecture. Established in 1906 (Meiji 39) as a memorial for the Russo-Japanese War, it is a highly regarded scenic spot, ranking 3rd in the 'Niigata Scenic Beauty 100' selection. It is also officially recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots due to its impressive collection of approximately 3,000 cherry trees. The park features Mt. Atago, where visitors can enjoy the changing seasons through spring cherry blossoms, autumn foliage, and seasonal flowers like azaleas and hydrangeas.
The park has a deep historical connection to the early 20th century, having been developed in October 1906 to commemorate the Russo-Japanese War. The area retains traces of local history, including connections to the 30th Infantry Regiment that was once stationed in the region. Additionally, the presence of the 'Chuken Tama-ko' statue adds a layer of local cultural storytelling. Decades of dedicated planting and maintenance have preserved the rich natural environment seen today.
The park features well-maintained walking paths and an observatory centered around Mt. Atago. From the summit observatory, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the Kamba Plain, as well as stunning sunsets and nightscapes. The most iconic sight is the spring season, when roughly 3,000 cherry trees, predominantly Somei Yoshino, bloom simultaneously in a spectacular display. Rare varieties like the 'Hosaki Higan Yaezakura' can also be found. Furthermore, from mid-March to mid-April, the sight of 'Yukiwarasou' (snowdrops) blooming alongside the melting snow provides a unique natural spectacle.
Spring (March–April) is the peak season for cherry blossoms and the Snowdrop Festival, attracting many nature lovers. Autumn (around October) offers vibrant foliage. The observatory is also a popular spot for viewing sunsets and night scenery. During the Snowdrop Festival (early March to mid-April), specific guidance or events may be focused around the 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM timeframe.
Muramatsu Park is not just for viewing scenery; it is a well-equipped recreational area featuring an athletics stadium, a baseball field with night lighting, and a 50-meter public swimming pool. There are also various playground facilities for children, such as swings and slides. Visitors can enjoy hiking along the Mt. Atago trails or engage in nature observation, such as watching the seasonal snowdrop flowers.
The area surrounding the park is rich in history and nature. Nearby, you can find historical sites such as the Muramatsu Castle Ruins Park, which adds to the cultural depth of a visit to Gosen City.
For hiking the trails of Mt. Atago, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please be aware that there have been sightings of bears and wild boars in the area, so stay alert to your surroundings. During peak cherry blossom seasons, parking fees may apply, and traffic regulations (such as one-way streets or temporary closures) may be implemented. Please do not park on the streets, as this is strictly prohibited and subject to police enforcement. Cash is recommended for any parking fees during events.
