Morito Shrine (Morito Daimyojin) is a historic sanctuary located in Hayama Town, Miura District, Kanagawa Prefecture, where history and nature exist in perfect harmony. Situated near the coastline, it has long been cherished as a place of faith that protects the local community. With deep historical ties to the legendary Minamoto no Yoritomo, the shrine is also a vital spiritual center for modern prayers, such as blessings for childbirth, easy delivery, and Shichi-Go-San ceremonies.
The history of this shrine dates back to 1180 (Jisho 4). It is said that Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate, established the shrine by inviting the spirit from Mishima Taisha in Shizuoka Prefecture. Yoritomo's deep devotion to Mishima Myojin laid the foundation for the Kamkura Shogunate's influence in this region. Throughout the centuries, it served as a place of prayer for successive Shoguns and the Miura clan. Additionally, the shrine grounds contain monuments honoring figures who helped introduce Hayama as a resort area in the early Meiji era, linking the site to Japan's modern history.
The shrine grounds are dotted with numerous historical monuments and cultural assets. A must-see is the "Morito Daimyojin Juniper," a natural monument designated by Hayama Town, as well as the ancient "Senkan-matsu" tree associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo and Wada Yoshimori. Visitors can also find monuments dedicated to Dr. Berthelot and Minister Martino, who played significant roles in the development of Hayama. Furthermore, various poetic monuments (Kahi) left by famous poets and historical figures allow visitors to experience different facets of Japanese history through literature.
