Chapel on the Water is a breathtaking chapel located within Hoshino Resorts Tomamu in Shimukappu Village, Hokkaido. Designed by the world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, the structure is built on the concept of 'cutting out' nature. The site is enclosed by a massive L-shaped concrete wall amidst a forest of white birch, creating a sense of separation from the mundane world. As you step inside, you enter a space where water, light, wind, and greenery are integrated into the architecture, offering a profound sense of tranquility.
This architectural work is highly regarded in modern Japanese architecture and received the 31st BCS Prize in 1990. Based on Ando's philosophy of capturing nature through human will, the space is designed not just as a wedding venue, but as a place for dialogue with the natural world. Its striking aesthetic has also drawn international attention, having served as a filming location for music videos, such as those by the group BoA.
The most striking feature is the chapel's structure. The space is surrounded by glass, directly reflecting the surrounding landscape. At the altar, a shallow pool of water (about 15cm deep) holds a floating cross that shimmers with the movement of light and wind. Additionally, four concrete crosses are positioned on the roof, allowing sunlight to pour through the skylights and create a dramatic interplay of light and shadow within the interior. The architectural journey from the approach to the inner sanctum, where the view gradually opens up, is a highlight in itself.
The chapel reveals different expressions depending on the time of day and season. The morning is highly recommended for a 'Morning Walk' experience, where you can enjoy the crisp air and the sound of birds. In the evening, the atmosphere becomes mystical as candlelight reflects off the water's surface. The summer months, when the white birch forest is lush and green, are particularly beautiful. Even on rainy days, the sound of raindrops hitting the water adds a layer of meditative silence to the experience.
Special programs are available to help visitors experience the architectural beauty. For instance, the 'Morning Chapel Visit' allows you to spend a quiet moment amidst the natural light. At night, the interplay of light and shadow through candlelight creates a sublime atmosphere. Please note that as this is a functional venue for weddings, it is important to check the official schedule beforehand, as access may be restricted during ceremonies.
The chapel is situated within the Hoshino Resorts Tomamu complex. The entire Tomamu area is surrounded by the vast nature of Hokkaido, with various resort facilities and seasonal activities nearby.
