Kaseda Fumoto in Minamisatsuma City is a designated "Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, a place that preserves a unique historical atmosphere. Unlike the samurai residences of Chiran or Izumi from the Edo period, this area features approximately 100 buildings that symbolize the prosperity of the Meiji era and onwards, telling the story of Kagoshima's modern history. The landscape, shaped by stone walls along water channels, groves of Podocarpus trees, and traditional samurai gates, offers a distinctive historical value unique to this region.
Historically, this area served as a "Tojo" (outer castle town) of the Satsuma Domain. As modernization progressed after the Meiji Restoration, many structures reflecting this transition were preserved, including large-scale residences, modern Japanese-style houses, and even Western-style clinics with wooden siding. In 2019, the area was recognized as part of the "Japan Heritage" site, "Towns where Satsuma Samurai Lived: Walking through the Samurai Residences of Fumoto," which includes 95 cultural assets across nine cities in Kagoshima. The town's layout, which skillfully utilizes the natural terrain, is a physical manifestation of the region's historical development.
