On the other hand, Nawate-dori is a unique shopping street characterized by its charming frog-themed motifs, offering a friendly and whimsical atmosphere. These areas are more than just shopping districts; they are living museums where you can truly feel the history and culture of Matsumoto.
This area developed as a castle town serving Matsumoto Castle. The surrounding Nakamachi-dori preserves many historical structures that pass down the local culture to the present day. Nawate-dori also holds historical significance related to the castle's outer moat. Today, the area is famous for its 'frog' symbol, a concept deeply rooted in the community through events like the 'Kaeru (Frog) Matsuri' (Frog Festival), which is organized through the cooperation of local residents and students.
In Nakamachi-dori, you will find a variety of traditional craft shops, elegant restaurants, and specialty boutiques. The shops housed in traditional kura-zukuri buildings offer a stunning glimpse into Japanese architectural beauty. In Nawate-dori, the charm lies in the delightful frog decorations found throughout the street and the friendly atmosphere of the local shops. Nakamachi-dori hosts various seasonal events. For instance, from March to November, a pedestrian-only zone is often implemented on certain Sundays, allowing for a more relaxed walking experience. From June to November, the 'Matsumoto Kaeru Matsuri' (Frog Festival) brings a lively energy to the streets with many frog-themed festivities. While daytime is perfect for capturing the architectural beauty in photos, visiting during twilight is highly recommended to see the street lamps light up, creating a deeply nostalgic and romantic atmosphere.

In Nawate-dori, we recommend a relaxing experience of enjoying local gourmet snacks and street food while searching for the various frog-themed decorations that decorate the town.
Major sightseeing spots in Matsumoto are clustered around these shopping streets. The National Treasure Matsumoto Castle is within walking distance, allowing you to combine a castle visit with a stroll through the historic streets. The Matsumoto City Museum and the Matsumoto City Clock Museum are also nearby for a deeper cultural dive. Furthermore, the beautiful Onabatagawa River flows nearby, offering a scenic landscape where nature and history harmonize.
