Matsue Castle, located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, is a prestigious site designated as a National Treasure of Japan. It is one of only twelve original castle keeps (tenshu) remaining in the country. The castle is renowned for its distinctive appearance, characterized by the beautiful contrast between its black-plastered exterior and white walls. The majestic keep, standing tall upon heavy, imposing stone walls, serves as a vital architectural link to the Edo period.
Constructed during the Edo period, the castle's keep was officially designated as a National Treasure in 2015. It has served as a significant historical stronghold in the region for centuries. The surrounding area is rich in culture, with nearby facilities like the Matsue Historical Museum helping to preserve and showcase the deep-rooted history of the Shimane region.

The landscape of Matsue Castle changes beautifully with the seasons. The entrance hours for the castle keep are 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM from April to September, and 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM from October to March. The Honmaru (inner bailey) area opens from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM during the summer months (April–September) and 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM during the winter months (October–March). Visitors can enjoy the stunning cherry blossoms in spring and the unique lighting effects that highlight the castle's silhouette in summer and autumn.
Visiting the castle keep allows you to experience the interior of a traditional Japanese fortification. Please note that when entering the keep, you are required to remove your shoes and place them in a provided shoe bag. Beyond the castle, the surrounding area offers a rich historical environment, including the Matsue Historical Museum and nearby boat tours on the Horikawa River, which provide a unique perspective of the castle from the water.
There are many historical sites within walking distance. The Matsue Historical Museum offers excellent exhibits on local history, making it a perfect companion to a castle visit. Additionally, you can enjoy a scenic boat ride through the castle moat via the Horikawa Sightseeing Boat. The area is also home to sites related to the famous author Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo), adding another layer of cultural depth to your trip.
When entering the castle keep, you must remove your shoes and carry them in a shoe bag. We recommend wearing comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off, and wearing socks. Because the interior features steep stairs and uneven surfaces, wearing practical, comfortable clothing is highly recommended.
