Hotel Mikasa, located in Karuisawa, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture, is a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. Originally opened as the 'Mikasa Hotel,' it played a central role in the development of Karuisawa as a world-class international resort. The building is a stunning example of Western-style wooden architecture, once boasting the most advanced and luxurious facilities of its time. Today, it stands as a beautifully preserved monument to history.
The building first opened in May 1906 as the 'Mikasa Hotel.' It is a unique piece of 'pseudo-Western' wooden architecture designed by Japanese architects. Due to the many famous figures who stayed here, it was once affectionately known as the 'Rokumeikan of Karisawa.' Throughout the decades, its purpose shifted, including a period where it served as a facility for the US Army after World War II. In 1980, its immense architectural value was officially recognized when it was designated as an Important Cultural Property. It remains a precious cultural heritage site that continues to tell the story of Japan's modernization.
The exterior and structure of this Western-style wooden building reflect the sophisticated architectural techniques of the early 20th century. In its heyday, the vast grounds once included annexes, gardens, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and even a cricket yard. Visitors can explore the main building to feel the atmosphere of an era when this was one of the most luxurious destinations in Japan.
The best season to visit is during the summer months of July and August. The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the final entry allowed at 4:30 PM. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate details of the wooden structure and the grandeur of the architecture.
While the primary focus is on architectural appreciation, visitors can also learn about the culinary history of the hotel. This includes the cultural background of the food and coffee culture that was once served to elite guests during the hotel's peak years.
The 'Mikasa-dori' street, which connects the Old Mikasa Hotel to the central Karuisawa area, is famous for its beautiful tree-lined paths. The surrounding area is perfect for a relaxing stroll, offering a deep sense of the historical charm of Karuisawa.
