Kyu-Kutomi House is a building in Saga City, Saga Prefecture, that deeply preserves the atmosphere of the Taisho era. It was built in 1921 (Taisho 10) by the first generation owner, Kiichi Kutomi, as the "Kutomi Footwear Store." The structure is characterized by its position facing the old Nagasaki Kaido and consists of a main house (East Wing) and a storehouse (West Wing). The entrance to the main house is approximately 9 meters wide, giving it a heavy, dignified presence as a significant large-scale machiya from the Taisho period.
While preserving its historical exterior, the interior has been renovated for modern use. The first floor houses a cafe and photo studio, while the second floor serves as an atelier and studio for various tenants, making it a functional part of contemporary life. It is also officially recognized as a Saga Prefecture Heritage site, serving as a vital piece of local history.
This building holds a significant history as a footwear wholesaler that once expanded its reach across the region. During the era of the second generation, Yoshiji, the business grew extensively, establishing a footwear manufacturing plant in Hita, Oita Prefecture, and even expanding sales routes to the Korean Peninsula. It played a crucial role in the local economy until around 1980.
The interior preserves many artifacts from that era. For instance, the East Wing retains its original beams and earthen floors, and the wooden sign reading "Footwear Wholesaler" is still displayed inside. These intricate details vividly convey the bustling commercial energy of the past.
The most striking feature is the traditional Japanese exterior, with its beautiful white walls and black tiled roof. The passage between the main house and the storehouse leads toward the river in Yanagimachi, offering a scenic view that captures the essence of the old town. The western part of the building features a robust storehouse-style construction that is particularly eye-catching.
Inside, visitors can observe the remnants of the former workspace, the structure of the second floor once used for storage, and the original beams and earthen floors. Since it now functions as a cafe, you can experience modern culture while immersed in a historical architectural setting.
During the bright daylight hours, the contrast between the white walls and the blue sky is stunning, allowing you to see the architectural details clearly. The scenery harmonizes beautifully with the peaceful atmosphere of the surrounding Yanagimachi area.
Depending on the season, you can also enjoy the changing colors of the surrounding greenery. The single deciduous tree in front of the building changes its expression with the seasons, adding color to the landscape. Visiting in the afternoon to enjoy a relaxing time at the cafe is highly recommended.
The building operates as a multi-purpose space utilizing its historical architecture. At the first-floor cafe, you can enjoy drinks and light snacks within a traditional setting. The second floor serves as a creative hub with ateliers and studios.
As it also functions as a photo studio, it is possible to take professional or artistic photographs within the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese machiya. The charm of this building lies in its evolution from a historical site to a living, breathing modern space.
Kyu-Kutomi House is part of the Saga City Museum of History and Folklore complex. Nearby, you can find other historically significant buildings such as the Old Koga Bank and the Old Ushijima House, allowing for a deep exploration of Saga's historical streetscape.
