Kushiro Taisho Donpaku is a grand festival of food and fireworks held in Kushiro City, Hokkaido. The name 'Donpaku' is a creative combination of 'Don' (the booming sound of fireworks) and 'Paku' (the sound of eating heartily). This event is famous for launching some of the largest fireworks in Hokkaido, including the massive 'Sanjaku-dama' (3-shaku fireworks). The festival celebrates the bounty of the earth, the riches of the sea, and the beauty of the night sky.
The roots of this event trace back to autumn festivals in the 1990s, such as the 'Kushiro Cosmos Fair' and 'Kushiro Wetland Fair.' Following a period of transition, the current form of 'Kushiro Taisho Donpaku' was established in 2004 to integrate these local traditions. It also carries the legacy of the fireworks displays once held during the 'Kushiro Port Festival,' evolving into a modern spectacle that features impressive 2-shaku and 3-shaku fireworks shells.
The centerpiece of the festival is the spectacular fireworks display. The launch of the 'Sanjaku-dama,' one of the largest firework shells in Hokkaido, is the most iconic and breathtaking moment of the night. Beyond the lights, the event is a culinary paradise, featuring agricultural fairs and seafood programs. Visitors can explore various food stalls offering fresh local delicacies from Kushiro's oceans and farms. Depending on the schedule, the event also includes live music stages and various local festivities.
The festival is typically held in September, usually around the second Saturday of the month for a duration of about three days. The main fireworks display begins around 19:00, with the highlight—the massive Sanjaku-dama—scheduled for approximately 19:30. During the daytime, the atmosphere is centered around food fairs, agricultural showcases, and live stage performances.
At the venue, you can immerse yourself in the flavors of Kushiro. The agricultural fair showcases the best produce from Hokkaido, while the seafood programs highlight the fresh catches from the local waters. You can also enjoy various forms of entertainment, such as live music stages. Other nearby areas related to the festivities include the Kushiro Fisheries Center (Marine Pos Kushiro), Kushiro Subport Market, Sakaemachi Heiwa Park, and the Kushiro River area. For the best views of the fireworks, popular spots include the North Pier (Kita Futo), Yomeicho Park, Kushiro City Lifelong Learning Center, Kushiro Bridge, and the Kushiro Fisherman's Wharf MOO area.
As the event takes place in open outdoor spaces and near the waterfront, please prepare for temperature changes. September in Kushiro can get quite chilly at night, so bringing a warm jacket or extra layers is highly recommended. Since many food stalls operate with cash, please carry enough Japanese Yen.
