The Museum of Tawaradake Satsuma Rebellion is a historical learning facility located at 'Tawaradake,' the site of fierce battles during the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877 (Meiji 10). This location served as the historic stage where the Satsama Army, led by Saigo Takamori, clashed with the Government Forces, and it is now part of the 'Satsuma Rebellion Historical Sites,' a nationally designated site. Within the museum, visitors can learn from multiple perspectives about the course of the Satsuma Rebellion—a pivotal event in the formation of modern Japan—as well as the social background of the era and the birth of the Japanese Red Cross Society through these conflicts.
The Satsuma Rebellion was a large-scale civil war that occurred during Japan's rapid modernization. The conflict between the Satsama Army and the Government Forces lasted approximately seven months across four prefectures in Kyushu, leaving a profound impact on the nation. In particular, the 17-day intense battle at Tawaradake holds immense historical significance as a turning point. The museum serves an important role not just as an exhibition facility, but as a place to pass down the drama of this era and the events that symbolized the dawn of modern Japan to future generations.
In the entrance hall, video presentations with subtitles are shown to help visitors gain a deeper understanding of the Satsuma Rebellion. The video content includes three types: 'Nationally Designated Historical Site: Satsuma Rebellion Sites,' 'Tawaradake and the Birth of the International/Japanese Red Cross,' and 'Behind-the-Scenes of the Immersive Exhibition Room.' Additionally, the museum displays exquisite replicas of the military uniforms worn by the Government and Satsama forces, as well as the nursing uniforms of the Japanese Red Cross. These high-quality replicas are essential exhibits that allow visitors to feel the reality of the historical period.
As an indoor facility focused on historical learning, the museum is accessible regardless of the season. During daylight hours, you can closely observe the detailed costumes and models on display. The video screenings at the entrance are a crucial element for gaining a more three-dimensional and immersive understanding of the historical drama.
The facility offers content that allows you to 'experience' history physically. One of the most popular activities is the corner where you can take commemorative photos while wearing historical costumes. You can dress up as a soldier from the Government forces, a member of the Satsama army, or a nurse from the era to take photos as if you were a person from that time. This area is a free section that does not require an entrance fee, allowing you to enjoy the historical atmosphere. There are also displays of models of Enfield rifles, allowing you to learn about the weaponry used at the time.
The area around Tawaradake is a historical landscape where the remains of the Satsuma Rebellion still exist. By comparing what you learn at the museum with the actual terrain and historical remains in the vicinity, you can achieve a much deeper historical experience. The museum is located in Ueki Town, slightly away from central Kumamoto City, and is highly recommended as part of a historical exploration route for Kumamoto sightseeing.

There are no specific restrictions on clothing, but we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that photography may be restricted in certain exhibition areas.
