Kusabara Hachiman-gu is a historic shrine located in Oita City, Oita Prefecture. Founded as a branch of the famous Usa Hachiman-gu, it has long been revered as the most important shrine in the Bungo region. The shrine grounds, surrounded by a deep, ancient forest, house several buildings designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The seamless integration of architecture and nature creates a profound sense of tranquility and historical weight.
The shrine boasts a long history dating back to the early Heian period. Its architectural style is unique, following the patterns of Usa Jingu, a highly prestigious shrine. Many of the structures, including the main hall and various gates, date from the Edo to Meiji periods. Through dedicated preservation efforts, these cultural assets are being passed down to future generations. The site serves as a vital center for understanding Japanese architectural techniques and the history of spiritual belief.
The most striking feature is the South Gate (Nandaimon), adorned with exquisite carvings of dragons, flowers, birds, and saints. This gate is also known as the 'Higurashi-mon' due to its breathtaking beauty. The main hall (Honden) is a rare example of the Hachiman-zukuri style, standing with immense majesty. Visitors can also experience the incredible energy of the 3,000-year-old camphor tree, a famous power spot. While beautiful year-round, the shrine is particularly stunning during the seasons of fresh greenery and autumn foliage, when the colors of the forest contrast beautifully with the-shrine structures. A special period occurs during the first three days of the New Year (January), when the Treasure Hall is open for public viewing. Visiting in the crisp morning air allows for a deeply meditative experience.

Kusabara Hachiman-gu is situated in a lush, natural area of Oita Prefecture. The surrounding forests are perfect for peaceful walks. It is located southeast of Takasakiyama, making it an excellent addition to a sightseeing route through Oita City, allowing travelers to enjoy both nature and history in one trip.
Since the grounds are a natural environment with stone paths and unpaved areas, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Please note that payments for amulets (omamori), sacred seals (goshuin), or prayers are typically handled in cash. For visiting the Treasure Hall or special events, it is best to check details in advance. As this is a sacred space, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor during your visit.
