Kotonomama Hachiman-gu is a historic shrine located in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It enshrines the deity Kotonomachihi-me-no-mikoto, who governs the power of 'Kotodama' (the spirit of words). As the name suggests, it is a sacred place where it is believed that wishes expressed through words can be fulfilled, attracting many visitors seeking spiritual connection. The shrine grounds are dominated by awe-inspiring natural monuments: a massive sacred cedar reaching approximately 36 meters in height and a camphor tree standing at about 31 meters, both showcasing the immense power of nature.
This shrine holds the prestigious status of the Ichinomiya (the highest ranking shrine) of the ancient Totomi Province. Its history is deeply rooted in Japanese literature; it is said to be mentioned in the 'Makura no Soshi' (The Pillow Book) by Sei Shonagon during the Heian period. Historically, travelers walking along the Tokaido road would stop here to pray for safe passage. The cultural reverence for the power of words remains a living tradition here, where the spiritual practice of sending one's wishes to the deities through spoken or heartfelt words is still cherished.
The most striking features of the shrine are the colossal trees. Beside the worship hall stands the Great Sacred Cedar, approximately 36 meters tall, which carries a legend of being planted by the famous general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. The 31-meter camphor tree is also a designated natural monument of Kakegawa City. Walking through the grounds feels like entering a sacred realm of life force. Another unique cultural highlight is the ritual of 'polishing the white stones' near the main shrine, a tradition unique to this sacred site.
While the shrine grounds are accessible 24 hours a day, the shrine office (for receiving amulets, Goshuin stamps, or formal prayers) is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The scenery is beautiful year-round, but the lush greenery of the early summer season is particularly striking, making the vitality of the giant trees feel even more powerful. For a peaceful stroll and to fully soak in the atmosphere, visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended.
A special ritual at this shrine involves the 'Blessing Ceremony' near the main shrine. Visitors select three white stones from around the small shrine, polish them with sincerity, and in doing so, receive blessings for themselves, others, and the world. To participate, you should first obtain a piece of white paper at the shrine office. In this sanctuary of words, taking the time to organize your thoughts and prayers into clear, heartfelt words is a profound experience that allows you to momentarily escape the busyness of daily life.
