Koganezaki is a beautiful cape located in Nishiizu Town, Kamo District, Shizuoka Prefecture, facing Suruga Bay. Its most striking feature is the rock face that glows a brilliant golden color when bathed in the setting sun. This unique geological formation consists of propylite, created by the alteration of volcanic materials through hydrothermal processes, and is designated as a Natural Monument of Shizuoka Prefecture. Furthermore, it is renowned as one of the few premier locations in West Izu where you can witness the majestic silhouette of Mount Fuji rising above the sea horizon.
The geological structure of this area has a unique origin shaped by volcanic activity and geothermal processes. On March 18, 1988, the area was officially designated as a Natural Monument due to its significant academic and aesthetic value. Historically, stones quarried from this area were even used in the construction of Sunpu Castle. Additionally, the area holds a literary connection, with a monument dedicated to the famous author Yukio Mishima, making it a place where natural beauty and literature intersect.
Koganezaki offers a diverse range of natural landscapes. During sunset, the rock face literally turns into a golden spectacle, creating a mystical atmosphere alongside the shimmering sea. Visitors can also spot unique rock formations, such as a stone that resembles a horse's head. The area is well-maintained as "Koganezaki Park," featuring walking paths, grassy lawns, and observation decks. To the north, the Koganezaki Beach offers a 100-meter stretch of sandy shore with exceptionally clear water, perfect for exploring the shoreline.
The most magical time to visit is during the late afternoon and evening. The moment the sun begins to set and the cliffs glow golden is the quintessential Koganezaki experience. During the summer months (July to August), the area becomes a popular destination for beachgoers, offering activities like swimming and snorkeling. While the park is open year-round, visiting during the summer allows you to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the beach alongside the stunning natural scenery.
You can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the cape's walking paths, observing the dramatic contrast between the steep cliffs and the blue ocean. At the beach, the high water clarity makes it an excellent spot for water-based leisure. The observation decks provide a panoramic view of the Izu Islands and Suruga Bay, with Mount Fuji often visible in the distance. It is a perfect place for nature observation and photography.
The area around Koganezaki is rich in the natural beauty of West Izu, with scenic driving routes along the coastline. Within Nishiizu Town, you will find various hot spring facilities and other beautiful coastal landscapes. There are also several accommodations and restaurants nearby where you can enjoy meals while gazing at the ocean.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the paths and observation decks. If you plan to enjoy the beach, please bring swimwear and sandals. Regarding payments, please carry cash as some local facilities or parking areas may not accept cards. While English signage is limited, please respect the natural environment by not touching the rock formations or leaving any trash behind.
