Koganzaki Furofushi Onsen is a one-of-a-kind hot spring facility located on the coastline of Fukaura Town, Nishitsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. The greatest charm lies in its reddish-brown open-air bath, designed to feel as if it is part of the coastline itself. The unique color of the water, caused by the oxidation of iron-rich minerals, blends perfectly with the vast expanse of the Sea of Japan, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere. Furthermore, the area is a scenic spot located at the foot of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Natural Heritage site, known as a place where you can feel the powerful energy of nature up close.
This area has a history of small hot springs emerging along the coast. In 1970, during a boring survey at a depth of 200 meters, the hot spring naturally surfaced, leading to the current formation. Since then, it has developed into a popular spot for hot spring enthusiasts. Today, as a single-owner inn standing right on the coastline, it continues to pass down the local hot spring culture alongside the region's rich bounty of the sea.
The most notable feature is the open-air bath set upon the rocky seaside. The facility includes a gourd-shaped mixed-gender bath and an oval-shaped bath exclusively for women; both offer dynamic views of the Sea of Japan. The experience of watching the sun sink below the horizon is truly unique to this location. Additionally, the indoor large public baths provide a panoramic view of the Sea of Japan from an elevated position, allowing guests to observe the changing expressions of the ocean depending on the season and time of day.
Bathing is available from sunrise to sunset. The most recommended time is during sunset. Soaking in the water while the sky turns a deep orange and blends into the sea is the quintessential experience of this facility. Throughout the seasons, you can enjoy the different moods of the Sea of Japan, from calm waters to powerful waves. While the summer is relatively pleasant, the Sea of Japan is characterized by very powerful and dramatic waves during the winter months.
Here, you can experience a deep connection with nature that goes beyond mere bathing. By soaking in the rich, brownish water filled with iron while listening to the sound of the waves, you can directly feel the energy of the earth. For guests staying overnight, the inn offers a culinary experience featuring fresh seafood caught in the nearby fertile fishing grounds of Maehami. Meals made with ingredients sourced directly from local fishermen represent the authentic food culture of this region.
The surrounding area is a scenic landscape at the foot of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Natural Heritage site. This region is also served by the Gono Line, making it accessible via scenic railway travel. Fukaura Town is also known as a rich fishing area, allowing visitors to touch upon the local maritime food culture. We highly recommend enjoying the coastal scenery while exploring the surrounding area.
