Kitamuki Kannon is a sacred temple of the Tendai sect located in Bessho Onsen, Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture. It is a venerable site said to have been founded in 825 by Jikaku Daishi Ennin, the leader of Mt. Hiei. The most distinctive feature of this temple is its orientation: unlike most temples that face south, Kitamuki Kannon faces north. This is based on the vow that the Kannon deity will save all living beings, much like the Big Dipper serves as a guiding light for the world.
Furthermore, while the nearby Zenko-ji Temple is associated with "future blessings" (salvation in the afterlife), Kitamki Kannon is believed to grant "worldly blessings" (happiness in the present life). Therefore, visiting both temples is a traditional practice to ensure happiness in both the present and the future, avoiding a "one-sided pilgrimage."
The history of Kitamuki Kannon is incredibly ancient, with legends of fires dating back to the 9th century. After undergoing major renovations in 969 and surviving periods of destruction during the Genpei War, it was restored by order of Minamoto no Yoritomo. The current main hall features the "Tsugi-zukuri" style from the Edo period. The region, known as the "Kamakura of Shinshu," was once a stronghold for the Shibata Hojo clan, and the temple remains deeply intertwined with this local history.
The temple grounds are filled with various historical structures. The main hall enshrines the Thousand-Armed Kannon. There is also the "Gakudo" hall, where Ema (votive tablets) have been offered since the Edo period, and the Onsen Yakushi Ruriden, which was rebuilt after a historical fire. Another significant site is the Aisen Katsura, a massive tree designated as a natural monument of Ueda City, estimated to be 1,200 years old and revered as a sacred tree for matchmaking and connections.
Kitamuki Kannon is open year-round from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Visiting in the early morning is highly recommended to experience the profound silence and the crisp, clean air of Bessho Onsen. The temple offers a different atmosphere in every season, with the sunlight highlighting the ancient trees and structures beautifully during the day.
Visitors can receive various amulets (Omamori) for protection, family safety, or matchmaking. A unique experience is using the "Senhin" (purification fountain), which uses the actual spring water from Bessho Onsen, allowing you to feel the essence of the hot spring while purifying your hands and mouth. You can also enjoy a peaceful stroll through the historic landscape near the Aisen-do hall.
The Bessho Onsen area is rich in history. Nearby, you can find Anraku-ji, which houses a National Treasure, and Daifuji, known for its striking three-story pagoda. Exploring these nearby temples will deepen your understanding of the profound historical layers of the Shinshu region.
