Kissui-en is a stunning Japanese garden located in Akiota Town, Yamagata District, Hiroshima Prefecture. Designated as a scenic beauty of Hiroshima Prefecture, it was created by the head of the Kake Sumiya, who managed iron-making (tatara) in this region during the Edo period. As a private garden, it is generally not open to the public, except for specific Saturdays and Sundays during the spring and autumn seasons. The garden features a classic stroll-style landscape centered around the 'Tsubo-ike' pond, offering a harmonious view of nature. It is also a precious habitat for the Giant Salamander Frog, a natural monument of Hiroshima Prefecture.
This area has long been a center for tatara iron-making. In 1781 (the first year of the Tenmei era), the foundation of the garden was laid by Hachiemon Sasaki, the 16th head of Kake Sumiya. Over the years, significant structures like the Kissui-tei teahouse and Kanayako-sha shrine were built, and the Matsubayashi-an Yakushi-do temple was relocated to the site. The garden reached its current refined form by 1807. Throughout its history, many notable figures have visited this site, and it was officially designated as a scenic beauty of Hiroshima Prefecture in 1951.
The garden is designed as a stroll garden, allowing visitors to walk around the perimeter of the central pond. The 'Tsubo-ike' pond and the 'Kissui-tei' teahouse, located on the northern hill, form the iconic landscape. Kissui-tei is a traditional Sukiya-style building consisting of two-tatami and four-tatami rooms. Other notable structures include the Kanayako-sha shrine to the west and the Matsubayashi-an Yakushi-do to the south. Visitors can also enjoy the sight of Edo-period maple trees and the natural environment where the natural monument Giant Salamander Frogs reside.
Kissui-en reveals different faces depending on the season, but public access is strictly limited. The primary visiting periods are the 'Spring Opening' in June and the 'Autumn Opening' in November. During the June opening, there are sometimes events related to the Giant Salamander Frogs. The garden is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM; visiting during the bright daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the intricate details of the pond and garden.
On public opening days, you can observe the historical architecture of the Kissui-tei and the surrounding natural ecosystem. The garden also features literary monuments related to the people who once thrived in this area, adding a layer of historical depth. Please note that the primary activity is quiet contemplation of the scenery rather than active sports or loud activities, making it a perfect place for peaceful reflection.
Kissui-en is surrounded by the rich natural beauty of Akiota Town. The nearby Sandankyo Gorge is a popular destination for nature lovers, making this a great area for scenic drives. Access is best via car or bus. If using public transportation, the 'Kake Chuo' bus stop is the nearest major landmark.
