Kiro-san Observatory Park is a scenic lookout located at an altitude of 301.1 meters on the southern tip of Oshima Island in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. Situated within the Setonaikai National Park, it is one of the most iconic waypoints for enjoying the landscapes of the Shimanami Kaido. The highlight is the 'Panorama Observatory Bridge,' designed by the world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma. This structure, designed to harmonize with nature, offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the dynamic currents of the Kurushima Strait and the beautiful archipelago below. It has received high acclaim globally, even ranking 2nd in TripAdvisor's 'Top Observation Spots in Japan 2017' list.
The name 'Kiro-san' is rooted in a legend from approximately 1,300 years ago. It is said that a traveling monk encountered a large turtle carrying a golden Kannon statue in a coastal cave. A temple was subsequently built on the mountain with that Kannon statue as the deity, giving the mountain its name. This region has historically been a vital maritime passage where nature and humans coexist. The current observatory also embodies a modern cultural heritage, designed with the concept of 'architecture that yields to nature,' ensuring the structure respects the surrounding topography.
The ultimate highlight is the panoramic view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge and the many islands of the Seto Inland Sea. On clear days, you can even see the distant peaks of Mount Ishizuchi, the highest mountain in Western Japan. At night, the landscape transforms into a mystical scene with the illuminated bridge and the beautiful night lights of Imabari City. The park shows completely different faces depending on when you visit. The most recommended time is during sunset. The sight of the sun sinking into the Seto Inland Sea, painting the water in golden hues, is truly breathtaking and attracts many photographers. At night, the illumination of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge creates a romantic atmosphere.
