Katsuragi Hitokotonushi Jinja is a prestigious shrine located in Gose City, Nara Prefecture, dedicated to the deity Hitokotonushi no Okami. According to local belief, this deity is said to listen to and grant any single wish or prayer, drawing many visitors from across the country. The shrine grounds are filled with a sacred atmosphere, highlighted by the presence of the 'Chichi Ginkgo' tree, which is estimated to be approximately 1,200 years old.
The history of this shrine is deeply rooted in the legends recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. One legend tells of the 21st Emperor Yuryaku, who, while hunting in the Katsuragi mountains, encountered Hitokotonushi no Okami. When the Emperor asked for the deity's name, the deity replied that they were the god of 'one word' (Kotowari), encompassing both good and evil in a single essence. Touched by this profound authority, the Emperor held the deity in deep awe. This historical background has established Hitokotonushi no Okami as a powerful and revered figure in Japanese mythology.
The central feature of the shrine grounds is the 'Chichi Ginkgo' tree, often considered a sacred dwelling place for gods, which exudes an overwhelming presence. Another notable sight is the pair of Shishi (lion-dogs) guarding the main hall. These consist of the 'Agyo' (open-mouthed lion) on the right and the 'Ungyo' (closed-mouthed dog) on the left, serving to protect the sacred space. Additionally, the Izumo Shrine architecture can be seen to the south of the main hall, offering a glimpse into traditional historical architectural styles.
The shrine hosts various rituals and offers special charms depending on the season. During the winter, specifically from two days before the Winter Solstice until Setsubun (the beginning of spring), the 'Ichiyo Raifuku' charm is available daily. This charm symbolizes the transition from darkness to light, or from bad luck to good fortune. In June, the 'Nagoshi no Harae' ritual is held, where visitors can experience the culture of praying for health and well-being through the 'Chinowa Kuguri' (passing through a large straw ring) ceremony.
Visitors can receive seasonal amulets and 'Hitogata' (paper figures). For example, in June, you can obtain a Hitogata (300 JPY) or a Chinowa-mamori (500 JPY). These are important cultural experiences for seeking protection from misfortune and the fulfillment of wishes.
