Kasukayama Jinja is a venerable shrine located on the slopes of Mount Kasugayama in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. The shrine enshrines the spirit of Uesugi Kenshin, a legendary figure in Japanese history, with the deity having been transferred from Uesugi Jinja in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture. The architecture is characterized by the 'Shinmei-zukuri' style, featuring a straight, sturdy, and dignified design. The grounds are dotted with historical documents and literary landmarks. Adjacent to the shrine, the Kasukayama Jinja Memorial Museum offers a deep dive into the local history through various exhibits and artifacts related to the enshrined deity.
The shrine was established in 1901 (Meiji 34) through the initiative of Sumiharu Ogawa, a former retainer of the Takada Clan, who sought to honor the deity's virtues. The establishment was supported by figures like Mitsu Hisama, known as the father of modern Japanese postal services. Interestingly, Sumiharu Ogawa was also the father of Mei Ogawa, one of Japan's most renowned children's literature writers. Mei Ogawa himself lived within the shrine precincts from the age of 15 to 20, creating a profound historical link between this sacred site and Japanese literature. The centerpiece of the shrine is the majestic shrine building designed in the Shinmei-zukuri style. Please note that while the Kasukayama Jinja Memorial Museum is generally open from 9:30 to 16:30, it is closed from December 1st to March 31st. It is highly recommended to check the schedule before your visit to ensure you can enjoy the museum exhibits.
