Karatsu Castle is a historic fortification located in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Originally constructed in 1607, the site is now beautifully maintained as Maizuru Park. The most striking feature is the observation deck at the top of the castle tower (tenshu), which offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Genkai Sea and the serene Matsuura Lagoon. At night, the castle is illuminated, presenting a completely different, mystical atmosphere compared to its daytime appearance.
This castle has a rich history dating back to the Edo period. Following the abolition of the feudal system in 1871, many structures were dismantled, but the area was later developed and opened as Maizuru Park in 1877. The current castle tower is a reconstruction completed in 1966, built as a five-story, five-level mock castle tower. In recent years, the historical landscape has been further restored, including the Higo-bori moat, stone walls, and the Taiko-do hall, ensuring the architectural integrity of the site. In 2017, it was officially selected as one of the '100 Famous Castles of Japan.'
The primary attraction of Karatsu Castle is the observation deck of the castle tower. From this height, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding natural scenery. After sunset, the castle tower is illuminated, offering a magical view of the illuminated fortress. Inside the castle tower, you can explore various exhibits detailing the castle's structure and history. Beyond the tower, a leisurely walk through the surrounding park allows you to explore the reconstructed turrets, stone walls, and the Taiko-do hall. The park area is perfect for a relaxing stroll where you can feel the connection between history and nature.
