Kenei-ji is the head temple of the Tendai sect, known by its mountain name "Toei-zan." It was founded in 1625 by the Great Priest Tenkai on the Ueno plateau, which served as the "demon gate" (northeast) of Edo Castle, to pray for the stability of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the peace of the people.
