Kanda-ke is a renowned folk museum located in the historic village of Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture. This facility serves as a living testament to the traditional architectural styles passed down through generations. Visitors can experience the authentic atmosphere of a Japanese lifestyle by observing the open hearth (irori) and various tools used in daily life, offering a deep connection to Japan's cultural roots.
As a preserved Gassho-zukuri structure, Kanda-ke represents the resilience and ingenuity of people living in harsh natural environments. The building serves as a historical record, showing how architectural styles and daily tools have evolved and been preserved over 200 years. It provides a unique window into how ancestors adapted their living spaces to survive and thrive in the mountains of Gifu.
The museum offers a multi-layered journey through history. On the 1st floor, you can relax in a traditional Japanese room featuring a sunken hearth (irori). The 2nd floor features a "fire-watching window" (himado), a structural element used to monitor the hearth. From the 2nd to the 4th floors, the museum displays various tools related to sake brewing, forestry, sericulture (silkworm farming), and weaving. The 4th floor also serves as an attic observation space, allowing you to see the unique structural design from within.
The scenery of Shirakawa-go changes beautifully with the seasons. In summer (July and August), the lush greenery provides a stunning backdrop for the thatched-roof houses. The museum is open from 10:00 to 16:00, with the last entry at 15:50. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to clearly observe the intricate details of the traditional tools and the architectural structure.
Walking through the different levels of the house allows you to learn about the traditional Japanese way of living. You can touch upon the wisdom of the past through the displays of household items and the hearth space. Additionally, there are signs available for commemorative photography, allowing you to capture your visit against the beautiful backdrop of the historic interior.
Kanda-ke is nestled within the Shirakawa-go village, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The surrounding area is filled with breathtaking views of many other Gassho-zukuri houses. A stroll through the village offers a peaceful way to enjoy the historical landscape and the preserved traditional atmosphere of the region.
