Kakazu Takadio Park, located in Ginowan City, Okinawa, is a vital site for understanding the history of the Battle of Okinawa. Formerly known as the '70th Hill,' this area was once a site of intense combat. Today, it has been developed into a park that serves as a place for peace reflection. From the observatory, you can witness a panoramic view of central and southern Okinawa, including Futenma Base and the sight of US military aircraft taking off and landing, providing a vivid look at modern- or current-day Okinawa.
This location holds immense historical significance. It was a place where many soldiers fought fierce battles. Within the park, you will find various monuments, such as the 'Kyoto Tower' dedicated to soldiers from Kyoto, and memorials for local residents. The preserved fortifications and trenches, built using the natural terrain, serve as a powerful reminder of the intensity of the past, making this a precious historical space for learning.
The park features several important historical relics. First, the reinforced concrete 'pillbox' (tochika) served as a defensive position during the war; its bullet-scarred walls tell a story of intense combat. You can also see 'trenches' carved into the Ryukyu limestone, which help visitors understand the living and fighting conditions of that era.
Furthermore, the observatory, designed in the shape of a globe, offers a stunning view of the cities of Naha and Urasoe, the blue ocean, and Futenma Base. As the park is located on high ground with some stairs and slopes, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since most activities are outdoors, please prepare a hat and sufficient water to protect yourself from the sun.
