Bend Dam is a multi-purpose dam located within the rich natural environment of Sapporo. It serves three vital roles: flood control, securing water supplies, and hydroelectric power generation. As a gravity concrete dam with a height of 117.5m, it is one of the largest in Hokkaido, offering an awe-inspiring view of its massive structure integrated with the surrounding landscape. Directly below the dam, you will find the 'Bend Dam Downstream Park' and the 'Bend Dam Museum,' where you can learn about the mechanics of the dam and the local environment.
This dam was constructed to mitigate the effects of major floods experienced in the 1970s and to secure a second water source for Sapporo due to rapid population growth. Completed in 1989, it remains a critical piece of infrastructure for the citizens of Sapporo. The Dam Museum features dioramas of the construction process and panels explaining the local natural environment, allowing visitors to understand the history of the engineering and the regional ecosystem.
The charm of Bend Dam lies in the ability to observe both engineering and nature from multiple perspectives. First, the 'Bend Dam Museum' offers a deep dive into dam construction through dioramas and interactive video displays explaining water supply and power generation. Second, the 'No. 1 Observatory' provides a stunning view of Lake Sapporo, allowing you to see the massive dam structure from the rear. Additionally, the 'Cross Gallery' (an inspection gallery inside the dam) allows you to walk through the internal structure of the dam, giving you a firsthand sense of its immense scale.
The area around Bend Dam offers beautiful scenery throughout the year. Spring brings blooming cherry blossoms, while autumn is famous for its vibrant foliage. The downstream park is designed with undulating terrain, providing various angles to enjoy the view. On certain occasions, when hydroelectric power is not being generated, you can observe the water discharge from the gates near the 'Keiryu Bridge.' Keep an eye out for rainbows that often appear in the mist during water discharge.
Learning about the dam's mechanics is a highlight, whether through the museum exhibits or the 'Cross Gallery' tour. The Cross Gallery is a part of the dam's inspection gallery opened to the public, maintaining a cool temperature of about 10°C year-round, offering a unique experience. Another popular activity is collecting the 'Dam Card.' These collectible cards can be obtained at the Bend Dam Management Branch or the Bend Dam Museum (1st-floor reception). The 'Jozankei Lake Line' is a popular scenic driving route near the dam. Along this road, there are several observatories overlooking Lake Sapporo. If you continue south, you can visit the Toyohira River Dam, which offers a different type of dam structure to explore. The downstream park also serves as a trailhead for climbing Mt. Kotengu (elevation 764.7m), perfect for nature lovers and hikers.
Since the Cross Gallery inside the dam remains cool year-round, it is recommended to bring clothing that allows for temperature adjustment. Because you will be walking on paths, stairs, and the dam crest, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Note that the walkway next to the museum has 402 steps up and 58 steps down, so please watch your step. In the park (downstream area), use of fire or setting up tents is strictly prohibited. As there are no shops, vending machines, or trash cans nearby, please bring your own drinks and ensure you take all trash home with you.
