Joeta City Aquarium Umigatari is a municipal aquarium located in Gochi, Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture. Following a major renewal in June 2018, it was reborn under its current name. Situated right along the coast of the Sea of Japan, the facility houses approximately 300 species and 45,000 individual marine organisms. A standout feature is its world-class collection of Magellanic penguins, alongside spectacular performances by bottlenose dolphins that captivate visitors of all ages.
The origins of this institution date back to 1934, representing a long-standing tradition of marine study and public engagement. Through its 2018 renovation, it was transformed into the modern "Umigatari" seen today. The structure consists of three floors, serving both as a local community landmark and a specialized facility for the exhibition and research of marine life and ocean ecosystems.

Inside the museum, you will find the "Magellanic Penguin Museum," where you can observe a large population of these charming birds and learn about their natural ecology. Another major highlight is the bottlenose dolphin performance, which showcases the dynamic energy and intelligence of these animals in a way that only a professional aquarium can. The facility is thoughtfully designed to allow visitors to explore the immense biodiversity of the ocean through various exhibits.
The aquarium is generally open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Please note that operating hours may vary depending on the season or specific dates, so it is highly recommended to check the official schedule before your visit. While dolphin performances are held throughout the year, the specific timing of events and the types of animals on display may change based on the season, weather conditions, or special exhibition schedules.

At the Magellanic Penguin Museum, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of penguin life cycles and behaviors. The dolphin shows offer a high-energy experience, allowing you to feel the power and movement of the animals underwater. These programs are the core experiences that make a visit to Umigatari truly memorable.
The aquarium is located in the Naoetsu district of Joest City, an area characterized by its beautiful coastline. The surrounding area is rich in tourism resources, offering stunning views of the Sea of Japan. The location is easily accessible via car or bus, connecting visitors to other scenic spots in the Niigata region.
To ensure a comfortable visit, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as you move through the various exhibits.
