Iwa Jinja is a historic shrine located in Ichinomiya-cho, Shiso City, Hyogo Prefecture, renowned as the Ichinomiya (the highest ranking shrine) of the ancient Harima Province. Dedicated to the deity Okimi-no-kami, it has been a center of local faith for centuries. The vast shrine grounds are characterized by towering cedar trees that seem to touch the sky and stone structures that exude a sense of antiquity, offering a quintessential Japanese shrine landscape. It is a place where the changing seasons and historical rituals blend seamlessly.
The history of this shrine is incredibly ancient, with origins tracing back to the era of Emperor Keiko or Emperor Kinmei. Its name is recorded in the Engishiki, an ancient imperial-era register, highlighting its national importance. Despite facing various historical fires, the shrine has been continuously rebuilt through the patronage of the imperial court and local leaders. Even the name of the local area, "Ichinomiya-cho," serves as a testament to its status as the premier shrine of the Harima Province.
The centerpiece of the grounds is the main shrine building nestled within the sacred forest. Behind the main hall lies the "Tsuru-ishi" (Crane Stone), a site connected to a legendary tale where a powerful local leader observed a white crane sleeping upon a stone, leading to the construction of the shrine. Another remarkable sight is the "Meoto-sugi" (Married Couple Cedar), where two trunks grow from a single root, symbolizing the enduring strength of nature and life.
The shrine's atmosphere transforms beautifully with the seasons. In late August, the "Fuchin-sai" (Oil Lantern Festival) is held to pray for protection against wind and water damage, illuminating the grounds with thousands of flickering lights. In mid-October (15th and 16th), the most grand event, the "Autumn Grand Festival," takes place. During this time, five magnificent float carriages (Taiko-dai) enter the shrine grounds for the intense "Ner合わせ" (collision-style parade), allowing visitors to witness the raw energy of traditional Japanese festivals. A daytime visit through the sun-dappled cedar paths is also highly recommended to feel the natural energy.
Visitors can witness authentic Japanese traditions firsthand at Iwa Jinja. The autumn festival, in particular, is a sensory experience filled with powerful rhythmic drumming and spirited shouts, offering a deep insight into local culture. Additionally, near the Chikoshima Hime Shrine (often called Benten-sama), you can enjoy a moment of tranquility while watching colorful koi fish swimming in the beautiful pond.
