Itoyama Observatory is a scenic lookout facility located along the Shimanami Kaido in Imabari City, Ehire Prefecture. From this vantage point, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, the scattered islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and the ships navigating the strait. Because it is situated at a higher elevation than the adjacent Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory, it provides an even more expansive and breathtaking panoramic view. It is also conveniently accessible from Sunrise Ituyama, one of the most important hubs along the Shimanami Kaido cycling route.
This region has long been known as a vital maritime strategic point. Since the Kamakura period through the Nanboku-cho and Muromachi periods, the area was controlled by the Murakami Kaizoku (pirates/naval forces) who dominated the seas. From the Meiji era through the 1970s, red lighthouses were also used to ensure maritime safety. Today, the surrounding facilities serve as educational centers, featuring exhibits on the engineering technology of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge and historical materials that convey the unique cultural and geographical characteristics of the region.
The primary feature of Itoyama Observatory is the magnificent view of the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge directly in front of you. The view encompasses the unique beauty of the many islands in the Seto Inland Sea, the complex currents of the strait, and the movement of large vessels. The 360-degree unobstructed panorama allows visitors to observe the layout of the surrounding islands. Nearby, you can also find monuments such as the "To the Sea" statue by Kaito Takashina, a poem monument by Ujo Noguchi, and other stone monuments detailing the area's history.
The scenery changes beautifully depending on the season, the tides, and the weather. In the early morning, you may witness sea mist or a stunning sunrise. During the day, you can observe the busy movement of ships through the strait, vehicles crossing the bridge, and cyclists on the path. At night, the view transforms as you see the lights from nearby facilities, lighthouses, and the navigation lights of passing ships. In addition to observing the scenery, the area is a popular spot for cyclists to rest and gather information. Sunrise Ituyama, located nearby, serves as a major rental cycle hub and a frequent stop for cyclists. At the observatory, visitors can use binoculars to observe distant islands and maritime activity in detail. The nearby Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory also offers educational exhibits and a shop where you can purchase local specialties such as citrus fruits and Imabari towels.
Right next to Itoyama Observatory is the Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory, which is fully equipped with an exhibition room, shop, and restrooms, as well as a parking lot. The surrounding area also includes the Taicho-so traditional inn, the Sunrise Ituyama cycling hub, and Shimoda Water Port, which serves as a starting point for high-speed current cruises toward Oshima Island.
Payments at shops and facilities can be made via cash or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.). However, please check local notices regarding any restrictions for the outdoor viewing areas.
The nearby Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory often provides English signage, exhibits, and staff assistance.
No prior reservation is required to access the observatory area.
The outdoor area can be quite windy, so wearing windproof clothing is highly recommended. Bringing binoculars is also suggested to enjoy a detailed view of the distant islands and ships.
Photography is permitted, but please follow local rules regarding the use of tripods or commercial photography.
While the nearby Kurushima Kaikyo Observatory has wheelchair-accessible parking, please note that the paths leading to the Itoyama Observatory may include slopes or stairs.
