Yamate Italian Yamate Garden is an Italian-style garden characterized by its sophisticated geometric design, located in the Yamate district of Naka Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa. It is called "Italian Hill" because the Italian Consulate was located here from 1880 to 1886. The design, which features geometrically arranged waterways and flowerbeds, mimics European garden styles, creating a unique landscape where seasonal plants and historic Western-style buildings harmonize beautifully.
The history of this site dates back to the establishment of the Italian Consulate in the late 19th century. The garden contains relocated and restored historic buildings. For instance, in 1993, the "Bluff No. 18" building, featuring a French tile roof, was added, and in 1997, the "Diplomat's House," a relocated residence of a Meiji-era diplomat, was established within the garden. These structures are important cultural heritages that preserve the history of the former foreign settlement. Furthermore, the garden reflects international exchange, such as the roses gifted from the sister city of Lyon, France.
There are several spots that captivate visitors. The geometric flowerbeds, with their precisely calculated plant arrangements, offer a stunning visual experience. The Metasequoia tree-lined paths also provide a lush, natural atmosphere.
