Ishiwarizakura is a highly distinctive cherry blossom spot located within the grounds of the Morioka District Court in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture. Its most striking feature is, as the name suggests, an Edohigan cherry tree that has grown by literally splitting a massive rock. With a trunk circumference of 4.3 meters and a height of 10 meters, this giant tree has wrapped its roots around a 21-meter wide granite boulder. The sight of such immense vitality coexisting with the harshness of nature is overwhelming for visitors. This dynamic fusion of natural wonder and the urban landscape of a functional government building is the unique charm of Ishiwari-zakura.
This cherry tree was designated as a National Natural Monument in 1923. With an estimated age of approximately 360 years, it is a historic tree that has watched over this land for centuries. It has been carefully managed and protected under the unique and challenging environment of growing through a massive rock. The presence of several support pillars used to stabilize the tree reflects the deep affection and meticulous care of the local community in preserving this precious cultural asset for future generations.
