Ishigakiyama Castle is a historic castle ruin located in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Originally known as Kasagake-yama, it became known as Ishigakiyama (Stone Wall Mountain) after Toyotomi Hideyoshi built it to surround Odawara Castle. The site is characterized by its massive stone walls using the 'Nozura-zumi' technique (stacking natural stones) and is protected as a National Park and a Nationally Designated Historic Site. In 2017, it was officially selected as one of the 'Continued 100 Famous Castles of Japan.'
During the Siege of Odawara in 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi built this castle to surround the Odawara stronghold. A fascinating legend persists that the castle was built in a single night—the 'One-Night Castle'—by using white walls to deceive the enemy into thinking it was completed instantly. In reality, the construction took approximately 80 days. The site serves as a testament to the political and military importance of the era. Beyond its military role, records show the site hosted important ceremonies, such as tea ceremonies and welcoming imperial messengers, highlighting its multifaceted historical significance.
The most striking feature of Ishigakiyama Castle is its 'Nozura-zumi' stone walls made of natural stones. The area known as 'Ido-kuruwa' is particularly famous for its well-preserved walls, showcasing ancient Japanese masonry techniques. The site consists of several defensive enclosures (kuruwa) including the Honmaru (Main Enclosure), Ninomaru (Second Enclosure/Stables), Sanmaru (Third Enclosure), Minami-kuruwa (South Enclosure), Nishi-kuruwa (West Enclosure), and Ido-kuruwa. Visitors can observe the ingenious defensive structures that utilize the natural terrain. Additionally, archaeological finds such as roof tiles near the former castle tower site provide physical evidence of its grand historical scale.
Located on a ridge at an altitude of approximately 250m, Ishigakimiya Castle offers beautiful views that change with the seasons. The surrounding vegetation is particularly beautiful in spring and autumn, providing a stunning backdrop to the ancient ruins. While there are no official closing times for the area, we recommend visiting during daylight hours to clearly appreciate the textures of the stone walls and the undulating terrain. Please be mindful of the mountain paths, as footing may change depending on the weather.
The primary way to experience the castle is through walking tours of the ruins. Walking through the various enclosures allows you to physically feel the strategic layout of the ancient fortifications. Ishigakiyama Castle is situated within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, surrounded by rich natural beauty.
