Iyari Wetland is a low-moor wetland located north of Azumino in Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture, situated east of Lake Kizaki. The wetland spans an area of approximately 130m in width and 500m to 1500m in length, and it is officially designated as a Natural Monument of Nagano Prefecture. The area features well-maintained boardwalks and paths with minimal elevation changes, making it an easy and accessible way to observe the delicate ecosystem. It is widely known as a peaceful, hidden gem where visitors can connect deeply with nature away from large crowds.
This region has preserved its rich natural environment since ancient times. The diverse flora that grows around the wetland is strictly protected as a Natural Monument of Nagano Prefecture. The surrounding topography and unique vegetation serve as vital elements that tell the story of the region's natural history and ecological preservation.
The greatest allure of Iyari Wetland is the shifting tapestry of seasonal plants. In April, you can observe Skunk Cabbage (Zaizenso), Marsh Marigold, and Asian Skunk Cabbage (Mizubasho). In early May, the landscape is colored by the foliage of the Hinoki tree and Mitsugashiva, while the rainy season brings the stunning deep purple blooms of the Japanese Water Iris (Kakitsubata), Iris, and Sweet Flag. Walking along the established boardwalks allows you to experience these botanical wonders up close.
The best time to visit depends on the season you wish to experience. From late March to early May, the wetland is a beautiful site for observing Asian Skunk Cabbage and Magnolia blossoms. In June, the Japanese Water Iris reaches its peak beauty. In winter, it is possible to access the vicinity using a 4WD vehicle and observe the serene, snow-covered wetland using snowshoes.
The area around the wetland is equipped with walking paths designed for nature observation. Along the circular route, you can deepen your understanding of the local topography and plant life through informative signage, such as the "Wetland Concept Map" located near the benches. Additionally, you can experience the purity of nature through the nearby "Iyari Ichibansui," a natural spring water source.
Lake Kizaki is located very close to Iyari Wetland. After your walk through the wetland, you can easily move to the lakeside area to enjoy the scenic views of the lake. The entire surrounding area is surrounded by lush nature, making it a perfect destination for both nature observation and scenic relaxation.
To protect the fragile environment, please follow strict etiquette. Entering the wetland area itself is strictly prohibited to protect plant growth; please stay on the designated boardwalks. For clothing, we recommend comfortable walking shoes suitable for navigating wooden paths. As the environment is natural, please be prepared for changing weather conditions and bring appropriate gear.
