The Ichinomiya Tanabata Festival is a traditional Tanabata celebration held in Ichinomiya City, Aichi Prefecture. It is recognized as one of the "Three Great Tanabata Festivals of Japan," alongside the Sendai Tanabata and Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata festivals. Historically, Ichinomiya was the center of the Bishu region, once a world-class hub for wool production. This festival was established to pray for the continued prosperity and development of the local textile and weaving industries.
The first Ichinomiya Tanabata Festival was held in 1956. The festival is deeply rooted in the cultural history of the city as a textile center, serving as a way to honor the prosperity of the weaving industry. In addition to the traditional large-scale 'furishashi' (streamer) decorations, the event features creative decorations made by local elementary and junior high school students, making it a multi-generational community event that preserves local traditions.

The festival is held annually for four days during the last week of July, from Thursday to Sunday. Events unfold throughout the day and into the evening across the city. At night, the streets are illuminated by glowing lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere that is quite different from the daytime scenery.
The festival offers a broad spectrum of entertainment, ranging from traditional Japanese arts to modern entertainment. Visitors can enjoy traditional Wadaiko drumming and Japanese folk dances, as well as more contemporary performances like jazz, hula dancing, magic shows, comedy, and character shows on the special stages. The unique local atmosphere is further enhanced by the rickshaw processions and the community-wide 'Uchimizu' water-sprinkling activities.
The heart of the festival is the Ichinomiya Honcho Arcade area. Events are spread throughout Ichinomiya City, but the arcade serves as the main hub. The area is easily accessible on foot from JR Owari-Ichinomiya Station (JR Tokaido Main Line) or Meitetsu Ichinomiya Station (Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line/Meitetsu Bisai Line), with many local shops and restaurants nearby.
