The Hotaruika Museum, located in Namerikawa City, Toyama Prefecture, is an interactive museum themed around the ecology of the firefly squid (Hotaruika) and the mysteries of Toyama Bay. The facility is characterized by its modern, nearly circular architectural design situated by the sea, surrounded by an open space with water features. The interior is divided into a Museum Zone, which features enchanting light displays, and a Market Hall/Restaurant Zone, where visitors can enjoy views of the sea, sky, and the majestic Tateyama Mountain Range.
This facility has been developed over many years as a hub to convey the local culture and natural richness of Namerika City. The journey began with the establishment of the Namerikawa City Hotaruika Tourism Facility Construction Fund in 1989, leading to the construction of the 'Hotaruika Observatory' in 1992. The current museum opened in 1998. It serves as a vital cultural symbol, passing down the knowledge of the firefly squid—a precious gift from the rich waters of Toyama Bay—to future generations.
The museum offers numerous exhibits to help you understand the mysterious life of the firefly squid. One of the greatest highlights is the Live Theater, which hosts the 'Luminescence Live Show' that captures the squid's glowing phenomenon. Additionally, the 'Deep Sea Wonders' area allows you to encounter creatures from Toyama Bay raised using deep-sea water. The exhibition areas are designed to evoke the feeling of the deep sea through atmospheric lighting. You can also find original characters inspired by the firefly squid throughout the museum.
The peak season for firefly squid is from March 20th to late May. During this period, the museum focuses on live firefly squid displays and special interactive experiences. Please note that admission fees are slightly higher during this peak season. From June to mid-March the following year, the exhibits shift focus toward the mysteries of the deep sea and seasonal marine life. During the day, the glass-walled Market Hall offers a bright, refreshing atmosphere with views of the ocean and mountains. In the evening, the lighting creates a more mystical and dreamy ambiance.
This is more than just a viewing facility; it is an interactive museum designed to engage your five senses. Key activities include watching the bioluminescent light shows in the theater and exploring spaces that simulate the deep-sea environment. The location also offers the unique experience of enjoying the surrounding coastal scenery. Visitors can gain a visual and intuitive understanding of how the firefly squid lives and glows within the ecosystem of Toyama Bay.
The museum is adjacent to the 'Michi-no-Eki Wave Park Namerikawa.' The surrounding area features a beautiful coastline perfect for seaside walks. At the nearby roadside station (Michi-no-Eki), you can also enjoy local specialties, products related to deep-sea water, and various dining options. For a complete sightseeing route, you might also consider visiting other marine-themed facilities in Toyama, such as the Uozu Aquarium.
While the facility is climate-controlled and comfortable, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing for easy movement.
