Hikiyama Exhibition Hall is a unique facility that displays the "Hikiyama" (festival floats), the main protagonists of the annual Karatsu Kunchi festival held every November. The hall showcases 14 magnificent floats that have been carefully preserved and passed down through generations. These floats are designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties of Saga Prefecture, symbolizing the essence of Japanese traditional festival culture through their vibrant colors and powerful, imposing structures. Please note that due to the reconstruction of the main exhibition building, the displays are currently being held in a special space within the Furusato Kaikan Alpino.
The history of Karatsu Kunchi is long and storied, beginning in 1819 with the dedication of the first "Aka Shishi" (Red Lion) float to Karatsu Shrine. Since then, many more floats have been crafted. The production of these floats involves highly traditional techniques, such as layering hundreds of sheets of Japanese paper over a clay or wooden mold and applying multiple layers of lacquer. The luxurious appearance, adorned with gold and silver decorations, serves as a testament to the faith and culture that have supported the local community for centuries. These floats play a vital role in passing the region's traditions to the next generation.
The 14 floats displayed in the hall each feature a different motif, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Please be aware that there is a cutoff time for entry, so it is best to arrive in the early afternoon to ensure you have enough time for your visit.
