Higashihama Beach is a stunning seaside destination located in Iwami Town, Iwami District, Tottori Prefecture, characterized by its remarkably high water transparency. In water quality surveys conducted by Tottori Prefecture, this area achieved the highest possible rank of 'AA', ensuring an incredibly clear and pure swimming experience. The coastline forms a beautiful bow shape, lined with fine, soft white sand that creates a luxurious resort-like atmosphere. The area is a vital part of the San'in Kaigan National Park and the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark, ensuring that its rich natural environment is preserved for all to enjoy.
The Higashihama coast has long been protected as part of the San'in Kaigan Quasi-National Park (designated in 1955) and later the San'in Kaigan National Park (designated in 1963). Furthermore, in 2010, the region was recognized as part of the Global Geopark Network (GGN), highlighting its significant geological history and dynamic landforms. The coast is also celebrated in Japan as one of the country's most beautiful scenic spots, having been selected for lists such as 'Japan's Top 100 Sceneries' and 'Japan's 100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Beaches,' establishing its status as a premier coastal destination.
The greatest draw is the breathtaking view where the transparent sea meets the curved, white sand shoreline. Beyond swimming, the coastline features various rock formations and small caves, making it an ideal environment for nature exploration and tide-pooling. Additionally, Nishiwaki Coast—a location frequently featured in tourism posters—is just a 5-minute walk away, allowing you to experience the spectacular scenery of the San'in Kaigan Geopark up close. There is also a Higashihama Observation Point where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the vast coastline from a higher vantage point.
The peak season for swimming at Higashihama Beach is primarily from late July to mid-August. During this period, the strong sunlight enhances the incredible transparency of the water, making it the perfect time for snorkeling and swimming. The contrast between the white sand and the deep blue sea is most striking during the daytime hours in summer. When planning for swimming or exploring the rocky shores, please bring swimwear, beach sandals, and a change of clothes. Since you may encounter rocky areas, footwear that protects your feet is highly recommended. While nearby facilities provide showers, please bring your own towels and sunscreen.
