Heiwadai Park is a large urban park located on the hills of Shimokitaga, Miyazaki City. The most striking feature of this park is the "Tower of Peace" that rises majestically in the center. Surrounded by well-maintained walking paths, exercise areas, and flower beds that change with the seasons, the park serves as a vital relaxation space for both locals and visitors. The lush greenery provides a refreshing escape into nature right within the city.
The history of this park dates back to 1940. As part of the "2600th Anniversary Project," the area was developed alongside the construction of the "Ametsuchi no Motohashira" (the pillar of heaven and earth). At the time, it was a significant project involving immense labor and resources, designed to symbolize national strength alongside Mount Fuji.
Following World War II, under GHQ directives, certain names and symbols associated with State Shintoism were temporarily removed. However, the park was designated as a municipal park in 1957, and as development continued, it was restored as a symbol of peace. A notable historical record is that the Tower of Peace served as the second starting point for the torch relay during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Today, it remains a beloved local recreation site, standing as a monument to peace.
The park features the historically significant Tower of Peace. The changing scenery throughout the seasons is another major attraction. For instance, in early summer, the park is adorned with vibrant hydrangeas, and flower beds filled with pansies and petunias add colorful touches to the landscape. Visitors can enjoy the harmonious blend of nature and history through the stone statues and the lush, well-maintained forest paths.
The park is open 24 hours a day, offering different atmospheres depending on the time. During the day, you can enjoy the bright sunlight illuminating the colorful flower beds and green trees. The period from March to August is particularly beautiful, as the hydrangeas and seasonal flowers are in full bloom. Early morning or evening is an ideal time to observe the silhouette of the Tower of Peace under soft, gentle light.
Heiwadai Park is an ideal environment for exercise and leisure. You can enjoy walking along the paved paths or engaging in light recreation in the open areas. The park is also managed by a community-based volunteer group known as "Park Masters," who participate in cleaning and maintaining the flower beds. This community-driven management highlights the deep connection between the park and the local residents.
Near the park, you will find cultural facilities such as the Miyazaki Prefectural Comprehensive Cultural Park. The area is easily accessible via Miyazaki Kotsu transportation, making it a convenient stop during your sightseeing tours within Miyazaki City.
