Heiwa Park is a vital part of the 'Nagoya Higashiyama Forest,' located in the eastern part of Nagoya city. Historically, this area functioned as a 'Satoyama'—a traditional managed woodland used for fuel and food. Today, it is the center of the 'Nagoya Higashiyama Forest Creation' project, a collaborative effort between citizens, businesses, and the government to preserve the environment. The park features lush woodlands and the pristine waters of the Yamazaki River source.
This area once played a crucial role as a Satoyama, where human life and nature were deeply interconnected through land management. However, after the decline of traditional land-use practices in the 1970s, the forest faced degradation. Since 2004, continuous environmental conservation efforts have been underway to pass this natural heritage to the next generation. The park also holds historical significance, containing monuments related to notable cultural figures.
The park is divided into northern and southern areas. The northern section features Nekogado Pond, a popular habitat for various waterbirds. The southern section contains the forest that serves as the source of the Yamazaki River and a large cliff where you can observe the geological layers of Nagoya's earth. It is an ideal spot for observing diverse wildlife, including grey herons, spot-billed ducks, swallows, and various butterfly species like the Great Mormon.

Visitors can observe different flora and fauna depending on the season. You can watch waterbirds near the river or observe seasonal insects and plants within the woodlands. Special 'Satoyama Experience Workshops' (Rice Cultivation and Field Farming courses) are held during specific months, such as May, June, July, October, and December.
Heiwa Park offers unique programs to connect you with nature. The 'Satoyama Experience Workshop' is particularly popular, teaching the value of biodiversity and traditional Japanese agricultural techniques. There are two main tracks: the Rice Cultivation course and the Field Farming course. Please note that these programs require advanced reservation and are designed for participants elementary school age and above.
Heiwa Park is part of the broader 'Higashiyama/Heiwa Park' area, which includes the famous Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens. This vast forest area maintains a rich natural environment right in the heart of the city, making it a popular destination for nature observation enthusiasts.
When exploring the park, please act with respect for the natural environment. If you are participating in a workshop, ensure you check the required clothing and items in advance. As parking can become crowded, we highly recommend using public transportation to reach the park.
