Hagi Meirin Gakusha is a facility located on the site of the former 'Meirinkan,' the central school for human resource development of the Hagi Clan. The grounds feature the wooden school buildings of the former Meirin Elementary School, which remained in use until recently, including the main building which is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. This site is renowned as a place where many great leaders formed their ambitions during the Meiji Restoration, a pivotal era of modernization for Japan. Today, it serves as a hub for information on Hagi's history and the 'Industrial Heritage of Meiji Japan' through its Tourist Information Center, World Heritage Visitor Center, and the Bakumatsu Museum.
Since its establishment, the Meirinkan school played a crucial role in training the talent of the Hagi Clan, producing many individuals who contributed significantly to Japan's modernization. The site preserves historical structures such as the vestiges of the former Meirin Elementary School, the Yubikan, the Suiren-ike pond, and the Seiken-do hall. Building No. 2 houses the 'World Heritage Visitor Center,' which features exhibits regarding the 'Industrial Heritage of Meiji Japan (Hagi area: iron, steel, shipbuilding, and coal industries).' Additionally, the 'Bakumatsu Museum' displays materials related to the turbulent end of the Edo period, providing a clear picture of the social conditions of that time. A Tourist Information Center is also available, making it a perfect starting point for gathering information about your subsequent travels in Hagi.
