The Hachimantai Aspite Line is a scenic mountain road approximately 35–40 km long, connecting Kazuno City in Akita Prefecture with Hachimantai City in Iwate Prefecture. The name "Aspite" is derived from the belief that Mount Hachimantai was once thought to be a shield volcano (Aspite). This route is renowned as one of the most spectacular driving routes in the Tohoku region. As you ascend in altitude, the landscape transforms, featuring shifting vegetation, crater lakes, and dynamic geological formations. Because the scenery changes completely with each season, you can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of nature throughout the year.
This road was once a toll road, but it was opened to the public for free in 1992. Historically, the section on the Akita side was designated as a prefectural road in 1959, and it has long been maintained as a vital transportation and tourism route for the region. Today, it is managed as a major road spanning both Iwate and Akita prefectures, with a focus on preserving the pristine scenery within the natural park.
The greatest charm of the Aspite Line is the diverse scenery encountered while driving. As the elevation rises, the road winds through gentle curves along the mountain slopes. A unique feature of this area is the scattered lakes formed in ancient volcanic craters. Near Mikkaeri Pass, the highest point at approximately 1,613m, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Depending on the season, you might witness the "Dragon Eye"—a mesmerizing blue, translucent water surface that appears during snowmelt—or the magnificent "Snow Corridor" in the spring. These once-in-a-lifetime views make every visit unique.
Recommended visiting times vary by season. From mid-May to mid-June, you may witness the rare "Dragon Eye" phenomenon. For autumn lovers, early to mid-October is the peak time to see the mountainsides ablaze with vibrant colors. In the spring (from late April), driving through the snow-covered corridors is a spectacular option. Please note that during the winter season (early November to late April), many sections are closed due to heavy snow. Additionally, during the early opening periods, there may be nighttime road closures (typically between 17:00 and 8:30), so please plan your driving time carefully.
Beyond driving, this area is perfect for nature walks. From the parking area at Mikkaeri Pass, there is a walking course of about 30 minutes to the summit of Mt. Hachimantai, allowing you to experience the natural beauty of lakes like Hachimantai-numa and Kama-numa up close. Furthermore, the area is dotted with hot spring villages, allowing you to combine a scenic drive with a relaxing soak in an onsen to rejuvenate your body and soul.
The route is surrounded by the rich natural environment of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. The region is also famous for its hot spring culture, with nearby famous springs such as Jomoyu Onsen and Goshogake Onsen. At higher altitudes, you will find pastoral landscapes and unique geological formations shaped by volcanic activity.
Since you will be driving through high-altitude areas, temperatures can drop significantly. Even in summer, it is essential to bring a warm jacket and dress appropriately for the altitude. As this is a protected natural area, please follow the rules for environmental preservation, such as taking all trash back with you.
